Film OUT West: NAMIBIA NIGHT at Hagabion Göteborg
SAQMI presents two of Namibia’s first queer films, Kapana (2020) by Philippe Talavera, and Hand-holder (2023) by Tim Hübschle. The screening will be followed by a conversation with Max Fuchs, queer activist and curator of the evening and Ese, queer film artist. The entire event is in English.

Namibia’s first queer movie tells the story of the openly gay and middle-class insurance broker George and the closeted working-class kapana (grilled meat) seller Simeon. The ongoing criminalization of male same-sex relationships in the country and the stigma around it challenges their affection to each other. While Simeon struggles with societal expectations he finds out that also George keeps a secret.

After the loss of his husband, lonely widower Katanga brings a deserted souvenir shop back to life. Neighboring farmer Enrico has an eye on the shop and land since it was in family possession before. While he tries to convince Katanga to sell the shop to him, both fall in love. Receiving much criticism after he spoke out against state funding for arts and culture in his radio show, Katanga finds himself reflecting on the worth and benefits of arts to society simultaneously.

The event is curated by Max Fuchs (they/he). Max is a queer activist and academic born in Germany but living in Sweden. They studied social anthropology as well as educational science before and are studying the master program in Gender Studies at Gothenburg University at the moment. After previous research on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on queer activism in Namibia, they currently focus on same-sex intimate partner violence in the country. Besides being active in grassroots activist groups, Max is a board member of Trans Hälsoplattformen, a newly founded organization striving to improve trans healthcare in Sweden.
Ese (they/them) is a Nigerian-Swedish multidisciplinary artist and cultural worker based in Gothenburg. Ese works with text and video installations. Their work engages with topics that are LGBTQIA+ related and mental health issues. Ese has a BFA degree in Film Composition from HDK-VALAND- Academy of Art and Design, University of Gothenburg.
