Dokumentär kortfilm i konstrummet

Artist Statement / Bio August Joensalo
I am a Finland-based filmmaker, writer and artist interested in things such as memories, time, embodiment and play in the context of trans narratives. I use film and images for both creating relatable utopias for queers, as well as breaking the binaries of languages, bodies and identities.
My practice is centered around the idea of building an archive of a personal and communal queer life, while celebrating trans resilience, joy and existence. This is a meaning-making process for me – a constant desire to understand myself and my roots both as a trans and a Karelian artist, in a society where my histories from both of these intersections have been blurred, obscured or erased completely.
My gaze and visual eye is heavily shaped by an early obsession of cinema as a way to escape a world where I didn’t feel safe or that I belonged. Horror, scifi and everyday fantasy provided me a safe way for feeling, and sparked a desire to understand my own life through such storytelling. Cinema’s unique ability to communicate emotions is something that’s influenced both my writing and fine art works. With tenderness, self-irony, and playfulness, I want to create spaces for feeling held, loved and understood, even when experiencing dicult emotions.
