One of the world’s first archives for queer moving images is now up and running in Sweden! Anna Linder is the artist and curator behind the idea, which has recently received funding from Kulturbryggan. The idea, one that Linder has been working on for quite some time, first came to life during Linder’s research at the Valand Academy of Art and Design.
There’s a clear lack of space in this world for queer moving images. In my time as an artistic researcher, I found myself repeatedly facing the lack of archival space dedicated to the history of queer film. Archives working with film might have a queer section and archives working with queer histories might include moving images, but a single platform bringing the two together was missing. The thought behind our platform is to assemble all the various pieces of the queer moving images scene in Sweden and, as such, to be a place where all forms of expression are welcome; art films, motion pictures, documentaries, experimental films, essays, short films, armature films. Basically, any film that has some kind of queer approach/maker/origin and that has some kind of Swedish connection.
During the Gothenburg Film Festival there will be a film screening in collaboration with the Valand Academy of Art and Design. It’s going to be the archive’s second screening, after the sneak-peak preview at the Umeå European Film Festival in December 2017. Working with a number of different organisations throughout the project has further contributed to the visibility of the collection. Today the archive consists of about 250 titles, and the list just keeps growing! During the entire year we will continue to work with Lesbisk Odyssé – Myths and Reality, Filmarkivet.se and many others.

For the first time in Sweden, the Swedish Archive for Queer Moving Images is gathering the history of queer moving images into one place. This is a history of marginalisation through oppression and self-censorship. Through calling on the communities involved to provide knowledge and objects, and through methods including interviews, film screenings, presentations, workshops and discussions, we are creating the first platform for queer moving images in Sweden.

Ett av världens första arkiv för queer rörlig bild startar nu i Sverige!
Det är konstnären och curatorn Anna Linder som ligger bakom idén, som nyligen fått stöd från Kulturbryggan. Linder har tidigare forskat i ämnet vid Akademin Valand.
– Det saknas samlingsplatser för queer rörlig bild i världen. Under mina år som konstnärlig forskare i ämnet slogs jag gång på gång av att det inte fanns några arkiv med den inriktningen. Många har queera sektioner i sina filmarkiv eller så finns det arkiv som arbetar med queer historia där rörlig bild ingår, men en samlad plattform saknas. Tanken med plattformen är att samla den svenska scenen för queer rörlig bild där alla uttryck är välkomna. Konstfilm, spelfilm, dokumentärer, experimentfilm, essäer, novellfilm, amatörfilm. Ja alla rörliga bilder som på något sätt har ett queert förhållningssätt eller en queer upphovsperson, och som har någon svensk anknytning.
Under Göteborgs Filmfestival sker en visning i samarbete med Akademin Valand. Det blir arkivets andra visning, efter smygpremiären under Umeå Europeiska Filmfestival i december 2017. Samarbeten med ett flertal organisationer bidrar till synliggörandet av samlingen. Idag innehåller arkivet cirka 250 titlar, en lista som ständigt växer. Under året sker ytterligare samarbeten med Lesbisk Odyssé – Myter och verkligheter, Filmarkivet.se med flera.

The Swedish Archive for Queer Moving Images samlar för första gången i Sverige den queera rörliga bildens historia på en och samma plats. En historia som marginaliserats genom förtryck och självcensur. Med metoder som efterlysningar, insamlingar, dokumentation, intervjuer, arkivering, visningar, presentationer, workshops och samtal kommer den första plattformen för queer rörlig bild i Sverige att skapas.

”Arkivet är något som tidigare inte funnits och därmed kan förmera synen på queermiljön. De kan sin fråga och är hängivna i att låta konsten och kulturen bli synlig och få ta plats”.
”Projektägarna har identifierat ett kulturhistoriskt område som idag saknar forum för ”kunskapande” och projektets målsättningar att skapa en mötesplats och ett arkiv för den queera filmen är unikt eftersom det inte finns i Sverige idag”.
